Heat Treatment Tooling: points to consider

Save handling of furnace fixtures and charging equipment – why CE marking is obligatory and what operators should consider

There are still ongoing questions if load handling equipment forwarded by cranes are subject to an obligatory CE-marking as defined by 2006/42/EC directive on machinery. Also, the question has been raised if furnace fixtures and charging baskets are equivalent to load handling equipment as defined by this directive or just „handling devices“. The following should give an overview about the applicable laws on EC marking as well as mandatory considerations by the manufacturer and operating company. It will explain the duties of both; manufacturer as well as operator. Additionally, some advises about daily safety checks, regular overchecks, repair and maintenance will be given. This presentation will also explain some background information why fixtures have a limited lifetime and why operating conditions have a significant impact on time-in-service. Please note that the German Equipment and Product Safety Act is a national directive linked to the 2006/42/EC directive on machinery. This article refers to EC and the correspondent German law only; please check your national directives accordingly.

Heat treatment equipment – Engineering, Manufacturing, and Maintenance

Heat treatment equipment such as grids, fixtures or baskets are highly stressed components. The lifetime and operational safety strongly depends on the interaction between engineering, handling, and maintenance. The equipment is not only stressed by mechanical loads but also by high temperature corrosion and thermal stresses. A good understanding of all impacts can help to prevent failures and downtimes.

This presentation will provide an overview of considering metallurgical aspects such as high temperature corrosion and creep as well as mechanical engineering and design. In addition, the manufacturing and quality control of heat treatment equipment will be covered. Finally, some advises for repair and maintenance will be given including examples of typical failures.
